What is the direct and indirect relation between sex and literature?

I still have no idea why some writers use sex in their literary works (novels, poetry, ..etc)? Is it essential to have such trend if you want to have your works more widespread?What is the direct and indirect relation between sex and literature?It may not be necessary for the telling of their story, but it may be necessary in order to SELL it.
