What are some reasons why public schools should teach comprehensive sex education?

I am writing an English paper on the sex education debate. I believe comprehensive sex education should be taught in public schools (not just abstinence-only), but I can't think of any more reasons. These are the reasons I have so far:

1. To prevent teen pregnancy and STD's (by teaching contraceptive methods, etc)

2. To educate students about their bodies and urges

Can you think of any more? I need specific reasons, not just "because abstinence-only doesn't work."

Thanks! What are some reasons why public schools should teach comprehensive sex education?Look at how many young kids are on this board alone asking questions and/or are already pregnant!

Nuff said. What are some reasons why public schools should teach comprehensive sex education?
1. To promote teen pregnancy be teaching that it is okay to have sex.

2. To desensitize them to the emotions that come with sex.

3. To take the responsiblity off the parents

If you can counter argue those, then your paper will grow! What are some reasons why public schools should teach comprehensive sex education?have them understand the way of life for a teenage parent. and how their friends will ditch them because they ahve to stay home with the baby.
That's pretty much it.What are some reasons why public schools should teach comprehensive sex education? As adults we have a responsibility to educate our children about sex so they can make informed choices. It has been pretty much the norm here in the UK for years now, you guys are so conservative!!What are some reasons why public schools should teach comprehensive sex education?
Young adults are going to have sex. That is their nature. It is also the nature of any biological being.

As soon as the biological entity reaches a self awareness of procreation, they will act on it. That is like Darwinism or Catholicism 101.

For this reason education on the facts is important. Ignorance is not bliss, it is ignorance.

The facts are that humans are engaging in sexual activities at younger ages every ten years or so. That number reduces every 4 years by half. (see Human Population)

This is not just a subject that pertains to the individual, it pertains to the world. Education at an age of reasonable understanding is shown to be one of the best mission critical applications.

We are about to reach another Double , this doubling has been going on since Humans first started counting, and it is still occurring.

Years for Population to Double

Including some more estimates (together with an interpolated number for year 950), the world population has been doubled or will double in the following years (with two different starting points). Note how, during the 2nd millennium, each doubling has taken roughly half as long as the previous doubling. However, it is unlikely that there will be another doubling in the current century.[33]

That statement tells me that education is needed.
3. To give youth the ability to make INFORMED desicions about their sexual health and their future

4. It takes regular and consistant education to achieve behaviour change

5. To make sure that youth are recieving CORRECT information (not just gossip or rumours from their mates)

6. The word 'comprehensive' is key here- Sex is NOT just about pregnancy and STIs (we call them STIs in Australia)... Sex is also about relationships, communication, negotiation, respect...What are some reasons why public schools should teach comprehensive sex education?
Steve Martin had it right:

“Don't have sex man. It leads to kissing and pretty soon you have to start talking to them.”
